on Skudge & Different World - Lost Archives - Part I
at 9:41PM on January 4th, 2013
The Skudge track feels a little cheerier than usual. Nice and groovy. Different World is like deep house sculpted out of ivory and porcelain, glossy yet weighty. I dig.
on Various Artists - Field 09
at 9:35PM on January 4th, 2013
The Ohrwert track is so graceful, it sounds like it's TRYING to lull you to sleep with the gentle brushes and those careful whooshes. The ESHU track has a nicely cultivated atmosphere too, but it's not as distinctive. I like how "Crystal Mazes" pits prickly electro-like elements against such a soft-focus backdrop, and the Orgue Electronique track is nice and lush.
on Delta Funktionen - Traces
at 12:02AM on June 8th, 2012
really nice album—as usual, stylistically it's all over the place but unified by the production values and his sheer confidence. delta just seems like a guy who knows so much about—and loves—all kinds of techno, and it comes through in this sort of hybridized, between subgenre stuff. populist techno but not simple techno.
on Claro Intelecto - Second Blood
at 6:55PM on January 11th, 2012
deep, lush, soulful: exactly what I was hoping for from new claro intelecto material. heavy but gentle, and super graceful, I think "Voyeurism" is my favourite.
on John Beltran - Kassem Mosse & Sven Weisemann Remixes
at 12:17PM on June 23rd, 2011
Weisemann remix is gorgeous and the Mosse remix strikes a nice balance between ambient and techno.. and quite pretty for his usual productions....
on Morphosis - What Have We Learned
at 4:47PM on March 23rd, 2011
A bit like walking into some sort of techno hookah bar; unconventional beats are mired in soot, sweat, and stale smoke. Brilliant sense of both atmosphere and melody on this record, one of 2011's most inventive and most accessible techno albums.
on Mike Dehnert - Framework
at 4:44PM on March 23rd, 2011
Very solid album of futuristic grooves and fascinating textures. Impeccable production, efficient and clean, perfectly well-oiled German machine. "Klartext" and "Beatmatching" are my faves. Review for Little White Earbuds.
on Morphosis - WHWL - Remixes Part 1
at 4:52PM on November 10th, 2010
Newworldaquarium remix is fantastic submerged house in the way that only NWAQ can do... the other remix is surprisingly good too, a bit of a harsher, almost electro feel.
on Brendon Moeller - Close Up
at 12:12AM on September 26th, 2010
just when you thought you were never going to like anything remotely 'dub techno' ever again... jesus, this thing kills. "close up" is nasty, it's like modern love crew on uppers. stomps, squishes, sighs, groans... amazing motion contained in these tracks.
on Conforce - Grace EP
at 7:27AM on May 22nd, 2010
Amazing aggressive sounds from Conforce. "Shade" is incredible, an epic track condensed into four ridiculous minutes, "Grace" is a huge Detroit-style anthem, and "Insecure" is luxurious. Possibly the best Conforce material yet.
on Redshape - Red Pack
at 7:48PM on May 11th, 2010
Nearly impenetrable gauzy abstractions... "Soylent Red" is my favourite, a signature Redshape tune, along with "The Lesson." Great package, a little overwhelming all at once! Review at http://www.factmag.com/2010/05/10/redshape-red-pack/
